1/18 scale X-1 - the losing battle continues

Postby Morris » Fri Nov 09, 2018 7:11 pm

As per my board signature list, I'm currently fooling about with a Pegasus 1/18 X-1 - The plane is massive but the details are toy like.....
A pic of the side of the box

First thing I did was to cut the access hatch out and shape the residual hole (the kit is made of very thick plastic )

The landing gear bay / landing gear is very toy like and not much detail - built and painted it - wasn't very happy though cos' I want to get a fairly good model of the plane on the shelf.... :angry-banghead:

So I am going to back up a bit and see if I can modify some of the parts to at least resemble the Smithsonian picture gallery....still at it

It does look a bit crude, but must be an old tooling. Looking forward to seeing you work some magic on it.
One of my favourite subjects.
Cheers

Okay...Turned to the nose wheel first before going back to tackle the main gear - Here's what the nose gear looks like -

And the nose gear door,,,,,,

Here's the Smithsonian ser no 6062 (Yeager's one) - the actual nose gear and door -

I figured I'd use a 1/32 P-38 (Revell) nose wheel form the spares box and use some basic shapes to approximate the nose gear....hopefully,
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
Thinned the door edges so the door wouldn't look too thick, as mentioned added some scrape bits to the door and rivets...added 'nuts' etc. to the nose gear... :D

Okay....I worked on the landing gear some more (and the bays) - All I can do is add doo-dads - its constructed to have movable landing gear so its a it of a struggle to match or even approximate the real thing. In another thread (Mark's xmas build) it's mentioned about the Smithsonian gallery - It is nice - that sit eis what I'm using....it is cool!

The kit just has the lower Y-shaped yoke and the gear bay door - I added a loose copy of the actuating piston - opened the gear bay up and drilled a few holes in the box structure - everything is just so blocky and toy like... :angry-banghead: The lef tone is the modified one with more 'doo-dads' - The kit's read tyres are smooth - the Smothsonian one has a thread - I don't have the patience to grind that out, and 1/18th scale aftermarket parts are like hen's teeth :)

It does look a bit clunky. The cylinder on the main leg is a good addition. It's gonna take a bit of work to raise it from a toy to a model, but I'm sure you'll pull it out of the bag. Good luck!
