Zeptrader's HMAV Bounty

Its about time I started my Bounty diary again somewhere..and here looks cosy enought.

This was started years ago, when Del Prado first released it, Ive collected it, stored it, moved house, had more kids, had grandchildren and it sits in a cupboard (not gathering dust) waiting for me to just finish the masts and rigging, but what is holding me back is as soon as I add the mast's it wont go back in the cupboard, so I need to find away of displaying it without getting it covered in dust or knocked...so it begins..again.

I have loads of pictures of the build but not right from the start so I'll just add what I have and take it from there.

Looks like a nice tidy build Colin. I reckon it'll be a cracker when it's finished.

Great to see your bounty build diary Colin. I had followed it previously on another forum. It was your build diary which give me the urge to get mine out of storage and finish her. Looking forward to seeing yours complete.

More to come, just to remind you this was (and still is) my first attempt at making a wooden ship, some kit parts were badly moulded but I still used them.

And on we go with more pictures, at this time I had taken over my little outhouse brick shed that prevented any rows with 'er in doors'.:)

I was now at the mast stage of the magazine, the dowl that was supplied over 10 years ago with this kit was total rubbish, bend twisted you name it, there was no way I was going to use that, I decided on making my own. I searched the net for idea's and came up with this one..it worked out really well.

Image

An exact sized photocopy of the mast' from McKays book.

Image

Image

Image

First was to get the correct lenght from square stock, then shape both ends by simple cutting, then filling down the 4 side's to 8, then 16 ect ect.
It does take some time but I already had the wood, it was good for the job and no outlay on my part.

Image

Image

Image
This fore top mast is all one piece..I'm quite proud of it:)

Image

A - the original dowl supplied over 10 years ago..not going to happen!
B - Dowl sanded and shaped..not working!
C - Square stock..lets see
D - First attempt at one end first..now this is working!
C - Sorted, I like it.

Image
This give you a better Idea of how bad the wood was.

Thanks

That must have been really bad wood to warp like that. Your results look great.

Mast height HELP!!!

Postby zeptrader » Sun Sep 09, 2012 8:01 am

I wonder any of those who have the Del Prado Bounty would do me a favour, I have the main masts placed (Fore, Main, Mizzen) but to my eyes they all look to low, I have of course the magazine and the measurements that is asked but I'm not happy with the height.

What I'm asking is can someone measure from the deck to the base of the bibb on all 3 masts.

Thanks in advance

Ive just taken this picture to show my concerns regarding the magazine instructions for the height of the masts.

Image

Mizzen @ 110mm, Main @ 155mm and Fore @ 130mm.

I have a re-scale calculator that ive used with much success before and have used the follow number to calculate.

The Model is 1.43, John McKays Bounty book has a inboard profile (page 56-57) in 1.96 scale. The measurement from deck to bibb in 1.96 is -

Mizzen @ 80mm, Main @90mm and Fore @80mm

After re-calculate.
Mizzaen@ 178.6mm, Main@200mm and Fore@178.6

That means the mizzen and Fore need to increase by 68.6mm and the main need to go up by 45mm????

Is this correct..???

I think your calculations are correct. I would check a known/reliable.trusted measurement as well, just to make sure. I know when I've tried checking scales, I've corrected the one I thought was faulty, and then found that everything else was out as well, to differing degrees. McKays drawings are usualy good, but it's worth checking the printed scale. They sometimes have a 'ruler' along the bottom so you can measure the full sized dimensions, if you see what I'm trying to say.
Cheers
